 My contribution to Spanish Foundation

I have created a Carmen Folder for my students so they can easily find all they need in one place.

I have organised each type of activity into folders and each serve a different purpose.

They are also there to revise vocabulary and linguistic structures.

  • The Revision Practice and Homework folder contains each week’s homework together with the relevant handouts and mp3s, which have oral exercise for the students who could not come to the class and those who want to go over what we did in class.
  • Canciones y Letras folder is to listen and learn vocabulary, pronunciation fluency and intonation.

This way students can sing along, have fun and learn.

  • The Blog folder was created the second semester for the students to have the opportunity to write their blogs following certain instructions in preparation for the written exam. In order to avoid students writing with many mistakes, I tend to mark their work written by hand and then ask them to place in a blog. I insist that they must write using their own linguistic structures and avoid coping and pasting somebody else's work, in order to create a discipline from the beginning and avoid the temptations of plagiarizing.  The blog folder is subdivided by different sections that concentrate on one specific theme, all of which have been studied in class and cover everyday situations as specified by the curriculum. These sections are:

1. Presentations:

In this blog students have written personal information such as place of residence, work, studies, friends, family, likes and dislikes.

2. ¿Cómo es y qué lleva

In this blog students show a picture of themselves or someone famous and describe their clothes and personal appearance.

3. Cómo llegar a mi piso

Here students have the opportunity to practise the use of estar giving direction to the place where they are hosting an event.

4. Planes para el futuro

In this section they were given various alternatives to chose from, as long as they express future ideas.

The choices were future: holidays, weekend activities or career plans.

  • Recordings have mp3 recordings of students talking about their future plans. Each of the three colours represents each of my three groups. Speaking is spontaneous and the students express their ideas freely without my intervention. The objective is to give them confidence to express orally their ideas and do not feel inhibited by the fear of making too many mistakes. These activities were carried out in class and the students thoroughly enjoyed them.

My contribution to Spanish Elementary

I have also created a folder under my name for my students in Elementary to make access easier to find.

The organization is the following:

I have only one Spanish Elementary group, which is quite small. The needs of this group are therefore different from the three large Foundation groups. With the latter the use of student central and the blackboard has been more important to keep communication flowing. I have as a consequence, used the blackboard in a different way with this small group. The uses I have given to each section are specified below.

I have used these recordings mostly in the classroom as an exercise, but have advised my students to also listen at home. At this stage their listening comprehension is still quite limited. There are as in any group a range of mixed abilities and the less able have taken more advantage of this resource as they can listen as many times as they like in their own time.

The songs have been very successful and have helps with pronunciation intonation and vocabulary. This is still in its infancy and needs to be developed more fully.

The readings come from various sources and there is a link to TECLA which has very good reading comprehension exercises. I tend to leave readings for homework.

This contains links to BBC Spanish learning sites which are extra curriculum activities for students to do in their own time.

This section is used to introduce a new concept in class and for revision at home.
